Exercise Physiology is the scientific study of how the human body responds and adapts to physical activity

Exercise physiologists use this knowledge to design safe and effective exercise programmes for people of all fitness levels—from athletes to individuals managing chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, or arthritis.

The field of Exercise Physiology combines biology, anatomy, physiology and biomechanics to understand how the body works during movement, making it essential in sports science, physical therapy, biokinetics and wellness coaching. In particular, an Exercise Physiologist looks at the muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory and nervous systems and studies how regular movement can improve health, performance and recovery, as well as promoting healthy aging and physical independence.

This knowledge is used to design safe and effective exercise programs for people of all fitness levels, from athletes to individuals managing chronic conditions. Exercise physiology also plays a key role in rehabilitation and injury prevention. Core areas of study within Exercise Physiology include energy systems (aerobic and anaerobic metabolism); muscle function and adaptation; cardiovascular and respiratory responses; hormonal regulation during exercise; neuromuscular coordination and motor control. Exercise Physiologists work in the fields of sports performance and athletic training, clinical rehabilitation settings (such as cardiac rehab), health and wellness programmes, and in corporate and community fitness initiatives, as well as in research and academia.

Benefits of applying Exercise Physiology include:

  • Improved cardiovascular and muscular fitness
  • Better weight management and body composition
  • Increased strength, endurance, and flexibility
  • Reduced risk of chronic disease
  • Enhanced mental health and stress reduction

An Exercise Physiologist may recommend:

  • Biokinetics
  • Postural correction
  • Flexibility and balance training
  • Sports goal-oriented training
  • Pilates
  • Yoga
  • Physiotherapy
